Vets

While you may think that all veterinarians are created equal, it is important and helpful to have a general understanding of the different types of veterinary institutions when selecting a regular vet for your puppy, as well as when handling unique situations and emergencies. Please note we are not vets and none of this is veterinary advice.

Veterinary Clinics: These institutions cover vaccinations, microchipping, dewormings, and treat common illnesses as well! Many clinics perform little to no surgeries apart from spay and neuters so it is wise to speak with them about the range of services offered. Clinics will usually close after business hours and will not allow overnight stays or offer round the clock care.

Veterinary Hospitals: What most people think of when they think of a vet, veterinary hospitals offer a wider range of services than clinics. They keep a wider range of diagnostic tools on site such as x-ray machines, ultrasound machines, and even MRI’s. It is a good idea to establish a relationship with a vet at a vet hospital as a “primary doctor” for your English Golden. It is even better to find a vet with English Golden experience. Most hospitals offer hospitalization allowing them to monitor and treat complex situations more closely and effectively.

Exotic / Farm Vets: Within the realm of vet hospitals are exotic vets which see farm animals, bunnies, reptiles, and other animals besides cats and dogs. We generally prefer to go to cat / dog vets as they vets there have more expertise dealing with dogs.

Emergency Veterinary Hospitals: These institutions exist to offer immediate, often life-saving care to your furry companions. If possible, it is a great idea to live close to an ER and to have one saved to your phone in case the need ever arises. Some operate daytime only, nighttime only, or 24 hours, so keep that in mind as well.
