Obedience Training

While obedience training can encompass wide range of commands or tricks, its foundations always lie in a few commands; come, sit, stay, down, heel, no, and leash walking.

Come: this is an easy one to train with a high value treat as golden puppies naturally gravitate to humans.

Sit: an easy trick with sit is to raise the treat up and back above the puppy’s head so it is forced to sit to bite down on the treat.

Down: like sitting, putting the treat between the dogs front legs and down is a great way to get the puppy to lower its body on all fours to bite down on the treat.

Stay: after learning sit, rewarding the puppy for longer periods seated while not moving is an easy way to train stay.

Heel: Keeping a treat on the right side at waist level is 90% of training heel. Keeping the puppy’s nose on the treat for a few seconds before giving the treat away is a great way to build up endurance.

No: It’s important to use a firm, consistent tone when telling a puppy no while being careful to not scare or intimidate the puppy.

Leash Walking: Goldens are pretty easy to train to walk on a leash. Combining heel with leash training is a great way to avoid pulling or walking in constant zig/zag movements. We recommend a leash and collar over a harness as harnesses can promote pulling.
